Beirut, Lebanon – September 27, 2024
Lebanon is facing an escalating crisis as the conflict with Israel intensifies. The recent escalation in violence has caused a surge in casualties and displaced thousands. More than 77,100 individuals, including vulnerable groups, are now seeking refuge in over 565 public schools and public facilities, most, if not all, are under-resourced and ill-equipped to meet the basic needs of displaced populations, particularly Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and those with functional limitations and other special needs.
The World Rehabilitation Fund (WRF), which has been active in Lebanon since the 1970s, is deeply concerned about the severe challenges PWDs are facing in this emergency situation. PWDs are especially vulnerable, encountering additional barriers to accessing essential humanitarian services and rehabilitation services. In partnership with local governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations, WRF is advocating for the inclusion, protection, and support of PWDs to ensure their needs are prioritized and that relief efforts are tailored to address their specific conditions.
We urgently call on activists, professionals, donors, and decision-makers to prioritize PWDs in all humanitarian relief assistance. Immediate intervention is necessary to prevent new disabilities and avoid further aggravation of existing ones. Without rapid and targeted action, the situation could become catastrophic for the most vulnerable. Special attention is needed to reach marginalized PWDs, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
While WRF's resources are limited, we are currently able to provide critical person-focused support, including:
- Mobility aids and assistive devices
- Wound/Burn care kits
- Home/Selfcare supplies
- Disposable diapers
- Physical/Respiratory therapies
